How a hotel house call in Berlin works

Berlin hosts around 13 million overnight visitors a year — business travellers, tourists, conference attendees, families. Anyone who falls ill at Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz, Mitte, Charlottenburg or near East Side Gallery rarely has a local GP and faces a difficult task: navigating the German health system in a stress situation, usually in a foreign language. A private doctor's house call to the hotel is the practical and established solution. You call, describe your symptoms (English or other languages on request), give the hotel name, room number and contact — the doctor comes directly to your room, the hotel staff guide them discreetly.

In the room the visit runs like a normal consultation: structured history, physical examination, ECG if needed, rapid tests (influenza, RSV, strep, COVID, urine dipstick), oxygen saturation, blood glucose. The doctor brings a complete mobile practice. Diagnosis, treatment recommendation and a private prescription are explained on the spot. Often the doctor carries standard drugs (analgesics, antiemetics, antibiotic starter doses, antihistamines) — so you can take the first dose immediately without a night drive to the 24/7 pharmacy. For hotel guests we also issue a certificate in English or other languages for travel insurance — typically with diagnosis, therapy, travel-fitness recommendation and expected recovery time.

Important expectation: GOÄ applies in hotels too. The invoice arrives three to seven days later by email or post from the private billing service, fully itemised and usually with an English or bilingual explanation. You submit the invoice to your travel insurer and receive the contractually agreed reimbursement. International travel insurers (Allianz Travel, AXA Travel, World Nomads, US providers) usually cover private house calls for acute complaints in full. Travellers without insurance carry the cost — typically 220 to 380 euros depending on complaint, time of day and diagnostics.

Invoice 270 euros, her US travel insurer fully reimburses.
