Berlinale Sick — Hotel Doctor Berlin

Berlinale Sick — Hotel Doctor Berlin is a seasonal health occasion for which RAB Arztbesuche provides a licensed physician on a home visit anywhere in Berlin — daily from 6 am to midnight, usually within 60 to 90 minutes.

The Berlin International Film Festival in February brings tens of thousands of guests to the city every year — filmmakers, talent, press, industry. Anyone falling ill in the middle of a tight schedule of premieres, panels and interviews cannot afford to wait for hours in an ER or GP practice. We come to your hotel — Adlon, Ritz-Carlton, Waldorf Astoria, Mandala, SO/, Hyatt at Potsdamer Platz — daily 6 am to midnight, English-speaking, with rapid tests and prescriptions in hand.

Berlinale February — flu wave meets film festival

The Berlinale takes place every year in the second half of February — exactly during the peak of Berlin's flu wave. The Robert Koch-Institut typically reports the year's highest influenza incidence during these weeks. Anyone arriving from Los Angeles, Cannes or Tokyo often has no current influenza protection and meets a highly active virus environment. Add the classic festival conditions: little sleep, long days in closed rooms, many handshakes at receptions, cold red-carpet waits. It is no surprise that the Berlinale days become the medically toughest week of the year for many industry guests.

We see Berlinale guests at their hotel daily 6 am to midnight across Berlin. In the room we run an influenza A/B rapid test when symptoms fit, check vital signs, oxygen saturation and lungs, and decide on the spot about antiviral therapy, symptomatic treatment, voice rest, or — if needed — referral to hospital. Prescription, medical certificate in German and English and a GOÄ invoice via our Privatärztliche Verrechnungsstelle are issued at the same appointment — important for travel and production insurance.

Voice loss before a panel or premiere — what helps

Hoarseness and voice loss are a frequent concern during the Berlinale. Causes are usually viral infection, vocal overload (press day, panel, premiere Q&A), dry hotel air and dehydration. We examine the throat and larynx orientationally, rule out relevant bacterial complications, and advise on voice rest, inhalations, hydration and topical therapy where appropriate. No antibiotics without a clear indication. If we suspect laryngeal pathology, we organise a prompt ENT specialist assessment in Berlin.

When 112 is the right call even at the festival

For acute shortness of breath, persistent chest pain, altered consciousness, severe allergic reaction to catering, or suspected stroke, call 112 immediately. A fulminant influenza with high fever, breathlessness and oxygen saturation below 92 % also belongs in hospital. Our service complements the Berlin emergency service — it never replaces it. When needed we coordinate hospital admission by phone so you do not have to wait in the ER.

How the hotel visit works during the Berlinale

You call, or have the concierge call — we speak English and German. We briefly clarify symptoms, urgency and a time window. Typical arrival time to the Berlinale hotel corridor (Mitte, Potsdamer Platz, Tiergarten) is 45 to 75 minutes. Discretion is standard — we arrive in an unmarked car, without medical-look clothing, and check in either at reception or directly at the room.

In the room: history, focused examination, influenza or strep rapid test when indicated, treatment decision. Prescription (delivered by a Berlin pharmacy on request), English and German medical certificate, GOÄ invoice for travel or production insurance. If needed we arrange follow-up by phone or as a second house call.

Emergency? Dial the emergency number

If unconscious, with severe chest pain, breathlessness or heavy bleeding, dial 112 immediately. Our service complements the emergency services — it does not replace them.

Frequently asked questions

Can you also come after midnight for a Berlinale after-show?

Our regular window is 6 am to midnight. For Berlinale guests we extend availability when possible — call us and we will try to find a solution. For acute emergencies after midnight, Berlin emergency services (112) are the right route.

Do you issue English certificates for production insurance?

Yes. We write the certificate bilingually (DE/EN) as standard, with ICD-10 diagnosis, findings and recommended absence time. On request we add a short expert statement.

How expensive is treatment during the Berlinale?

Billing is strictly per the German GOÄ schedule via our Privatärztliche Verrechnungsstelle — no festival surcharge. Standard multiplier rates and house-call codes (day or night) apply.

Do you treat international crew members without German insurance?

Yes, very often. You pay the GOÄ invoice up front and submit it to your travel or production insurance. We prepare all documentation so reimbursement runs smoothly.
