When to Go to the ER in Summer

When to Go to the ER in Summer is a seasonal health occasion for which RAB Arztbesuche provides a licensed physician on a home visit anywhere in Berlin — daily from 6 am to midnight, usually within 60 to 90 minutes.

Berlin in summer — heatwaves, open-air events, lake swimming, sports injuries, wasp stings, GI infections after the buffet. ER departments at Charité, Vivantes and DRK are often overcrowded with waiting times of four to eight hours. Anyone deciding between ER, ambulance or house call gets clear orientation here from a Berlin family doctor.

Summer in Berlin — typical emergency patterns

Berlin summer brings its own medical focus: heatwaves with tropical nights, long days at Wannsee, Tegeler See or Tiergarten, open-airs at East Side Gallery and Mauerpark, sports events from the Berlin Half-Marathon to the Triathlon, returning travellers with exotic GI infections, wasps and bees in the parks, e-scooter and bicycle injuries. With this variety, ER demand rises sharply — and that's where the central question arises: which path is medically right?

The answer hinges on three factors: how acute is the complaint, how severe are the symptoms, and are there signs of a life-threatening course? With clear emergency signs — altered consciousness, acute shortness of breath, chest pain, severe allergic reaction, suspected stroke — 112 is always right. With moderate complaints like heat exhaustion, acute but stable infection, mild sports injuries, GI infections without severe dehydration, the house call is often the faster, calmer and more comfortable solution. We come daily 6 am to midnight across Berlin.

Call 112 — these are the signs

Altered consciousness or unconsciousness. Shortness of breath that does not improve with sitting calmly. Persistent chest pain, especially with radiation into arm or jaw, sweating, nausea. Severe allergic reaction with swelling of lip, tongue or throat, wheezing or shock. Suspected stroke — FAST: Face (drooping mouth corner), Arms (arm drift), Speech (slurred or impaired), Time (call 112 immediately). Seizure in adults, especially if unclear or prolonged. Very high body temperature above 40 °C with altered consciousness (heatstroke). Heavy bleeding that cannot be stopped. Suspected acute poisoning or overdose.

When a house call is the better choice

For moderate complaints without emergency signs, a house call is often the better choice than eight hours in a crowded ER. Typical summer examples: heat exhaustion without CNS symptoms, sunstroke with headache and nausea, GI infection after a buffet, wasp sting without anaphylaxis but with local reaction, acute respiratory infection with fever, mild sports injury with pain and functional limitation, migraine attack, urinary tract infection. When unsure, call us — we decide together whether a house call is enough or the ER is the right place.

How summer triage works

You call. We listen, ask targeted questions about emergency signs — consciousness, breathing, pain location, accompanying symptoms. If there are signs of emergency we stay on the phone until 112 is reached or the ambulance arrives. With moderate symptoms we arrange a house call — typical arrival time in Berlin 60 to 90 minutes.

On site: history, exam, vital signs, ECG, oxygen saturation and blood glucose if needed. Decision between outpatient care and hospital admission — if needed we coordinate admission to Charité, Vivantes or DRK by phone. Prescription, sick note, GOÄ invoice.

Emergency? Dial the emergency number

If unconscious, with severe chest pain, breathlessness or heavy bleeding, dial 112 immediately. Our service complements the emergency services — it does not replace them.

Case profiles

Typical scenarios

Heat exhaustion at Wannsee

Sunday, 36 °C, patient with dizziness and nausea after a long day. We treat on site, infuse if needed, advise — ER not required.

Wasp sting with local reaction

Sting in the neck, local swelling but no shortness of breath. We examine, treat with antihistamine and corticosteroid, observe and advise on emergency kit.

Chest pain with sweating

Patient with acute chest pain and vegetative symptoms — we call 112 immediately, stay on the line, hand over in structured form.

GI infection after hotel buffet

Tourist with nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain. We treat at the hotel, rehydrate, advise — ER not required.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between 112 and 116117?

112 is the emergency service for life-threatening situations. 116117 is the statutory on-call medical service for non-life-threatening complaints outside practice hours. Our private doctor service is a fast private alternative for moderate acute cases.

When does travel insurance cover the house call?

Most international travel and travel-cancellation insurances reimburse GOÄ house calls for acute illness. We issue the invoice so that reimbursement works smoothly.

Should I call first or just go to the ER?

With clear emergency signs call 112 immediately — don't lose time. When uncertain call us, we triage by phone and decide together.

Can I still be seen after midnight?

Our regular window is 6 am to midnight. After midnight 112 or the nearest ER is the standard route — we are reachable again from 6 am.
