If you fall ill on Friday night or wake up on Saturday realizing that work will not be possible until Monday, you face a question that concerns many employees: Can you get a sick note from emergency services – and if so, how? The answer is clear: Yes, a medical certificate of incapacity for work can be issued on weekends. What matters is where and how you access medical care.

Can You Get a Medical Certificate from On-Call Services?

Yes. Every licensed physician is authorized to issue a medical certificate of incapacity for work – regardless of whether it is a general practitioner, an on-call physician, or a private emergency medical service. The requirement is that the examination reveals medically justified incapacity for work. A medical certificate from a weekend house visit is legally valid and identical to a certificate from a regular medical practice.

When Do I Need a Sick Note on the Weekend?

Whether a medical certificate must be obtained on Saturday or Sunday depends on your employment contract and any applicable collective bargaining agreement. Many employers require the certificate only from the third day of illness. However, if you are unable to work on Monday and your employer requires uninterrupted documentation from the onset of illness, you should not wait until Monday.

A physician can issue a medical certificate retroactively from the beginning of the illness – but typically only for the day before the examination. If you fall ill on Saturday and only see a doctor on Monday, you may only receive the certificate from Monday onwards. An examination on the weekend itself reliably closes this gap.

Medical Certificate on the Weekend via House Visit – The More Convenient Solution

RAB Berlin, as a private on-call medical service, comes directly to your home – on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, daily between 6 a.m. and midnight. Following a brief phone call, the house visit typically takes place within 60 to 90 minutes. On-site, a complete physical examination is performed, and if medically justified incapacity for work is determined, the medical certificate is issued immediately.

This means: If you are too ill to work, you do not have to travel while sick and exhausted to an on-call clinic, endure travel time and waiting periods, or sit in a waiting room. The sick note comes to you – legally valid, comprehensive, and without additional burden. For further information about our services, please visit here.

Is a Medical Certificate from the Weekend Also Valid for Monday and Following Days?

Yes. A medical certificate of incapacity for work issued on Saturday or Sunday is valid from the date noted on it and must be submitted to your employer within the required timeframe. The illness onset date and the issuance date may differ if the physician determines incapacity for work retroactively. The certificate covers all illness days listed on it – including Monday and potentially beyond if the physician determines extended incapacity for work.

What Does a Sick Note on the Weekend Cost from a Private Medical Service?

Billing is processed according to the German Medical Fee Schedule (GOÄ). Weekend and evening surcharges are customary and legally regulated. Privately insured patients typically receive full reimbursement of costs. Self-payers and statutory insurance holders with supplementary coverage can also use the service – many supplementary plans fully or partially cover private medical house visits.
