Urgent prescription — and the practice is closed

Berlin has a rotating on-duty pharmacy system: every day dozens of pharmacies across the city run 24-hour duty, the list is available via apotheke.de and on notices at every pharmacy. That solves half the problem — if a valid prescription is in hand. The other half is the medical prescription itself. GPs are not reachable after 5 PM, the walk-in clinic is far away after 7 PM, and on weekends closed altogether. If the acute complaint requires a prescription-only drug — antibiotic for streptococcal angina, triptan for migraine, antiemetic for hyperemesis, cortisone inhaler for asthma exacerbation, first-line antihypertensive — a gap opens.

Typical out-of-hours prescription needs

Antibiotics for documented streptococcal angina, suspected pneumonia, urinary infection; triptans for migraine; antiemetics for hyperemesis and norovirus-induced vomiting; cortisone inhalers and rescue spray for asthma exacerbation; first-line antihypertensives for hypertensive crisis; oral first-dose cortisone for acute obstructive bronchitis; antiallergic medication for severe reactions; analgesia for lumbago and acute renal colic (tramadol, metamizole as indicated); eye drops for acute conjunctivitis. On-duty pharmacies in Berlin — how it works

The Berlin on-duty pharmacy landscape is well organised. Each Berlin pharmacy rotates through duty and is then open continuously. Typically 2 to 4 pharmacies per district are simultaneously on duty. We name you the nearest — we carry the current list and verify by phone whether the required drug is in stock before you go. With impaired mobility (lumbago, high-fever patient, senior) we coordinate courier or delivery. For specialty drugs not every pharmacy stocks, we name the right duty pharmacy directly — we keep an eye on market coverage.

How a prescription house call works

You call. We record symptoms, address and insurance. We give a realistic window. On site: thorough examination, diagnosis, prescription. If a first dose is appropriate (e.g. first-dose antibiotic for positive streptococcus, IM triptan for acute migraine with vomiting), you get it directly from us. The prescription covers the rest of the course.

You receive the prescription, the next suitable on-duty pharmacy in Berlin with address and phone, GOÄ invoice, behavioural rules, sick note if needed. GOÄ and prescription costs

The house call is billed under the GOÄ — typical cost EUR 220 to 400 depending on time of day. PKV reimburses fully. Self-payers pay directly. The prescription itself costs nothing; the medication is paid at the pharmacy (PKV submitted later, self-payers pay in full).
